What do I need to start gigging?
Hi there, i'm what most would call a 'total noob' when it comes to what I need to gig; whether it be big or small, a pub or open air, I have no clue. Anyway, what my band want to start giging and we don't know what to buy. We already have a microphone, a stand, tiny practice amps (3; one for voice, two for guitars), a keyboard with tiny speakers, a bass amp, a very loud acoustic drum kit and all those little accessories like effects pedals etc. Can I know, how loud I need our amps to be (for what one of my friends called a monitor so I can hear myself play), what a P.A system is and do I need one and general gig advice (how to set-up). Sorry, this question is very broad but I really have no clue. I would be so grateful to receive an answer

A P.A. system is a multi-channel system with speakers, either an mixer-amp-speakers combo, or one where the mixer and amp are in a single unit. See many of them at musiciansfriend.com or carvin.com (really good ones, very reasonable prices). If you get something with 10 or more channels, then you can mic your amps and even drums for larger clubs and run everyone through the P.A., which makes it easier to control the sound. You might want to get a couple of monitors some time, too. For small and medium clubs, you'll be fine with 200 - 300W, so you don't have to crank it all the way up and run into the risk of overdrive or distortion.
