Acoustic bridge snapped while re-stringing (DIY or not?)?
I was just putting some Elixers on my Fender Squier and tuning it up when...CRACK!!! The bridge snapped lengthways.
View the damage: http://i10.tinypic.com/7wu4uoy.jpg
I just rang my local guitar shop/showroom and the guy said he's never come across this problem before. He guesstimated it could cost between £40 and £50 to repair, with the old glue needing to be removed etc.
I'm a poor student and if I can buy a bridge and fix it myself I would. I have a few questions:
1. What would I use to get rid of the old glue on the body?
2. How do I know which bridges will be compatible with my guitar?
3. What type of glue should I put the new bridge on with?
4. Are there any special techniques or necessities I should know before attempting something like this myself?
Thanks for your help,
-Matt
Matt - total bummer. I've never seen a bridge snap like that either. Two suggestions: If the guitar is worth a lot then consider getting it done professionally. If not, then maybe it's worth considering doing it yourself. I'm pretty sure any acoustic guitar bridge would work fine. Remove the old bridge, lightly sandpaper the old glue away until you have a clean surface, apply new glue and bridge (you might want to find a clamp to hold it down), let it dry and should be ready to go. Let us know what you decide and how the finished product looks.
