Buying Guitar Question?
I'm thinking about buying a guitar from a Luither in my area. It is a Epiphone Masterbild acoustic which he repaired for a costumer but the customer ended up not needing the guitar. (Long Story...) Anyway, it had cracks in it from the constant climate change the customer went through from going to Florida and Wisconsin every year. His repairs are barely noticeable and he is selling it to me for $200. (Including free setup, new strings, and case.) He is also backing his repair on the guitar with a lifetime guarantee. It is a excellent guitar, solid top, bottom, and sides. Bone nut, saddle, and pins. What do you guys think?
I've played, taught, gigged,and horsetraded guitars on the side for 25+ years(I'm an engineer until 5 pm), so here's my two cents:
Jump on it- you've got a well-made, properly setup acoustic-that's two-thirds of the equation- I've owned my share of acoustics over the years- I've had a Martin D-28 which was almost unplayable until a tech set it up for me(saw it,the price seemed reasonable at the time, and I had the cash burning a hole in my pocket) and it played like butter -I've also had a five dollar garage sale special which I used to teach myself setup and repair techniques, and it's my backup acoustic for the few gigs my band and I still do.(Hey, I turned 50 last year and the house is paid for!)
When beginners start talking about blowing $2000 on a Martin or Les Paul, I tell them that if Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eric Clapton played on a $100 Squier that was properly set up, they'd still sound like Stevie Ray and Eric...Good Luck!
