Should I learn how to play the acoustic guitar?
I have always wanted to play the acoustic guitar since I was a little kid. I used to think it looked easy, but now I know it's definitely not. Almost everybody in my family can play and I just want to be able to jump in and play along with them.
I've been playing the alto saxophone for almost two years, so I know how to read sheet music. I am not tone deaf either (I have no idea if this has anything to do with playing guitar or not). I was planning on teaching myself to play. Is that a good idea?
What is the best beginning brand to buy? Or does it really matter? I have read that cheaper ones don't sound as good as the more expensive ones, so I plan on buying one that isn't super cheap.
Does anyone have any advice or tips for me? Do you think I should go for it?
Thanks! Much appreciated!
I think if you're that interested and have the heart and patience to pursue music, then go for it!
Try it, it's an amazing experience
You can also pay for lessons to help you on your way if you're new to music itself. The first thing you should get is a tuner, you can find online ones too, but it'll help you tune the guitar properly
Also you can get a metronome which helps with the beats to songs to help you count and play better by building up speed
For brands there are literally hundreds but Yamaha makes good guitars at reasonable prices
I would suggest doing some homework online, you can find which types and what is best to look for in guitars online. Strings, nylon is best for finer picking but weak in sound. Steel which I prefer is best for its sound quality but tough strings, so may be harder on your fingers until you build up the calases. Beginning brand doesn't matter, just choose laminent which protects the guitars or whichever you want as well as the pick guard. You can buy one with or without it. That's the little design on the body shape of the guitar that protects the wood from being damaged by the pick. You've probably seen them mostly in black, red, or different colours too
They also come in different shapes.
For purchasing it is best if you bring someone along who knows music and can play the guitar well because then they can help demonstrate for you and help you pick the best one. Remember you get what you pay for, so I would maybe be willing to spend up to $200 for one? They're not cheap and most are over $100, the good qualities anyway, so be prepared to spend for what you want. Also, make sure you try all the guitars, get one that sounds best, you should be able to mute the strings, make sure the sound isn't warped, like goes out of tune or sounds bad. If it does when you play then the guitar isn't in good condition.
Get a guitar that best suits you. Make sure its comfortable for you to play, not awkward. Classical guitars are small and great for beginners, but the acoustics can handle steel strings (most can, ask the shop attendant if you wish to test steel) and bigger than classical guitars. For classicals the steel strings would snap the neck of the guitar. You should be able to play comfortably. Don't feel pressured. If it doesn't sound right or feel right, don't get it. Older guitars, such as used ones are best for sound because it's going to take a year or two to break a new guitar in. What I mean is the newer ones won't have the same deep, rich, harmonious sound as older ones because the older ones have been played more. If you're getting used, which is cheaper, make sure to thoroughly examine the guitar for any damages. This is also why its best to bring someone with you who plays the guitar well, they can help you for the best buys
And try and get a good book that can help teach you, to teach you to play guitar, you'll advance best if you can start to teach yourself, and start with easy beginner chords and work your way up. A challenge is good for your progress but don't diminish yourself with difficult advanced chords. If you need help for chords or tabs you can e-mail me at de_hillier@hotmail.com. I can copy and paste links with this hotmail, can't with yahoo. I can send you easy songs to play
Also even guitar beginner CD's can be helpful too
Instructors can teach you easy ways to play guitar too, it's your choice
Remember the 1k guitars or around that price and up are for more serious, experienced players but you can spend that much if you want to. But it's all what you want ant what you're looking for. Me I would look for a lighter wood guitar, with a red pick guard because I think they're gorgeous and I have black which to me is plain and kind of ugly because it doesn't seem to "blend" with the wood or my taste, but that's me
One other thing, remember you will have to change the strings eventually. When the sound becomes warped, it'll probably sound like the way it does if your finger touches another string slightly when you play, or depending on how often you play the guitar. Some songs you can learn on the internet require a capo, this is a guitar clip and goes on the neck of the guitar to change its pitch. They're not expensive and you can make one but I wouldn't get it unless you want one
And there's no rush too.
