Connecting Acoustic Guitar to Mixer and PA System?
My church has a PA system and my acoustic guitar connects to the mixer via 1/4" cable. Is there any difference or benefit of connecting the 1/4" cable to a DI box and running a XLR cable from it to the mixer?
ANY Advantage???
Also, do i use a passive di or an active di???
I am so confused.
It would be good to know what type p-up you are using, but:
The advantages of an active DI, in your usage, are lessened noise and more signal control. They are also useful in changing a high impedance signal to a low impedance one (Impedance matching), but this is not an issue with your question. Not all mixing boards have 1/4" low impedance inputs either (many 1/4" inputs are high impedance). These input impedances are usually marked on the board - each input.
An active DI is better than passive at reducing noise but requires a power supply; depending on the box, this can be provided by batteries, wall power, and/or phantom power (14v/from the board - should check to see if the board has it).
A high quality passive DI is normally pretty quiet and dependable, but don't bother (waste your money) with other than top-of-the line ones.
The main reason for you to use a DI is that it takes a two conductor unbalanced line and converts it to a three conductor balanced line. (This is a separate issue, not to be confused with impedance). It is a common misconception that all lines that use regular tip/sleeve 1/4" guitar cord type connectors are high impedance. The output from a guitar that has a battery operated active preamplifier or pickup system will be low impedance in nature (as will the output of an electronic keyboard, guitar preamplifier, or guitar effects processor). The signals are unbalanced but LOW impedance in nature.
