Acoustic Guitar Dummies
Starting to play bass...?

I have been playing regular guitar both acoustic and electric for almost 20 years now and am quite good... I also sing, but lately I want to play bass for songwriting purposes, to have another key on my ring, and slot of the musicians I admire play bass...I was wondering if I can use my regular amp and effects pad for the bass as my electric guitar (Ibanez) and also the guitar tuner, do I need a separate bass tuner and amp for the bass?? I am going to try to teach myself with my guitar experience and using bass tabs of songs I like..any books out there, I was looking at the Dummies series for bass, as I have used there other books and found them quite good..but I was wondering since I have an idea of theory and regular guitar experience I would be able to skip a majority of the basics.....

Any advice is appreciated...

Having a knowledge of guitar and theory will definitely help you; just don't try to play the bass just like a guitar, because it's not =P
If you're playing a 4-string bass, the tuning is the same as the lowest 4 strings of a guitar (E-A-D-G) - if you're using a 5-string, standard tuning is B-E-A-D-G (one lower string) - if you have a 6-string, standard tuning is B-E-A-D-C (like a 5-string with one higher string).
You'll be able to use your same tuner for your bass. However...
I would NOT use a guitar amp with your bass. Not only do you risk blowing your speaker with the lower frequencies, but you'll probably damage your input circuit as well. It's not a good idea by any means.

I'd recommend just getting a small bass-amp; if you're looking for a small one for just practicing, try one of these:

Ashdown Perfect 10 (30W): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ashdown-Perfect-Ten-10-Combo-Bass-Amp?sku=485039
Acoustic AB50 (50W): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Acoustic-AB50-1x10-Bass-Combo-Amplifier?sku=481621
Roland MicroCube (30W): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Roland-Micro-Cube-Bass-RX-Bass-Combo-Amp?sku=483095

Obviously, if you intend to do any gigs with bass, you'll need more wattage than that (Probably closer to 300+), but if all you're doing is practicing and a bit of jamming, you won't need a very powerful bass rig.

Hope that helps.
Cheers!
