Should I get a spruce or cedar classical guitar?
Hi, I've been playing classical guitar for about 4 years and looking to get a new one. Right now I am playing a quite cheap ($300?) Yamaha guitar which I think is a spruce top.
I want to get an Alhambra 5P which comes in either a solid German spruce model or solid red cedar model. I do want it to last though I will probably be only playing it seriously for the next 2 years until I finish school. I don't really have any idea about the differences or feel of the two types but which do you think I should get and why?
Oh and, I usually like to play Romantic and expressive pieces.
The sides and back of the Alhambra 5P are laminated Indian rosewood and the neck is cedar if it helps in any way.
Cedar will give you a deeper, more mellow tone, while I find spruce to be more sharp, or rather "lively". From the web:
Cedar
An even, close-grained darker colored wood. It has a warm and sensitive mature sound right from the start and will maintain a quality sound for many years.
Sitka Spruce
The traditional wood for steel strung guitar tops gives a bright sound and good projection. When accurately quarter-sawn, it may exhibit long medullary rays and bearclaw figure. Spruce tops will mature over time tending to become fuller and less harsh.
I personally prefer cedar for classical guitars, and spruce for steel-string acoustics, but it's all in the ear of the beholder. From what you said you like to play, the cedar is definitely the way to go, but don't take my word for it, go play them and decide what your ears like. Good luck!
