If im starting to learn how to play the guitar, should I get an acoustic or electric guitar?
I am learning how to play the guitar but i need to get a guitar. I am probably going to be self tought, but might get an instructor. I have a classical guitar from a friend. Ive had it for a while, and there are only 2 strings left on it. I went on walmart.com and found an acoustic guitar for like 80 dollars with a case, strap, and a bunch of instructor books and learn how to play CD/DVD. Then I saw an electric for around 160 dollars with case, strap, small amp, instructor books, a DVD, and a CD for self tought people. plus some extra stuff i forgot. Please help and thank you for awnsering
!
It's really more a matter of the style of music you like to play. If you're more inclined toward acoustic music, you should go with an acoustic guitar. But if you mostly like electric rock and pop, there's no reason you shouldn't start with an electric.
Electric guitars are actually easier to play than acoustics because they've got thinner necks and lower action (strings closer to the fretboard), so it takes less finger strength and dexterity to form chords. But there are a few acoustic guitar companies whose guitars have thin necks, as well. Ibanez (both the acoustics and electrics) have incredibly thin necks, which makes them very comfortable for most beginners and people with small hands to play. Jasmine by Takamine acoustics are also very user-friendly for beginners.
I'd recommend that you go to a guitar store, rather than Wal-Mart, since you'll be able to get a much nicer, easier to play guitar for about the same price. The guitars sold by mass merchandisers aren't really built for playing and usually have chunky necks and high action, which makes them really challenging to play. But music stores carry guitars intended for students, so they're designed with players in mind. If you go to a store like Guitar Center and handle a bunch of different guitars, you'll find that some are just more comfortable to play than others. There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all guitar, so it's always better to compare the different brands before choosing the one that fits you.
I'll post some links to guitars worth considering. They've all got thin necks, low action, and positive reviews. And I'll include some starter packs that contain everything you'll need to get started.
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-JamPack-IJV50-Quickstart-Dreadnought-Acoustic-Guitar-Pack?sku=519456 (A very user-friendly starter pack from a respected guitar company.)
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jasmine-by-Takamine-S35-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516451 (A great guitar that plays much nicer than anything you'll find at a retail store.)
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rogue-Rocketeer-HSS-Electric-Guitar-Value-Pack?sku=582903 (An electric guitar, amp and accessories for $100!)
There are some great instructional DVDs available at Musician's Friend that contain everything you'd learn from years of private lessons, but which cost about $40. I bought the set for electric players after having played for more than 20 years and can't believe how much my playing has improved. They start with the very basics, then move into scales and reading tablature, and eventually teach you how to do complicated solos. They're the best instructional materials I've ever seen, as you can see from the reviews. Here are links to both the electric and acoustic DVD sets:
