Is the violin easy to learn if you have past music experience?
I am a high school musician and I've had 10 years piano experience, 7 on clarinet, and one year on guitar. I now want to take up the violin and try out for the local youth orchestra (they are DESPERATE for strings). First of all, how difficult is the violin if you have prior guitar expereince? From what I understand, violin is fretless, and I assume that makes intonation a royal pain.
Also, what types of violins are best for my needs? I will mainly be playing classical and chamber music on it, and maybe some church hymns from time to time. I am looking for classical technique training, so what kind of violins are best for that?
I have about a $500 budget. Is this realistic for a decent beginner to intermediate violin? I want a moderately good instrument, not some toy with terrible action (I made that mistake on my first guitar).

Intonation isn't as difficult as you might think, because the 'notes' on a violin are so close together when compared to a guitar. Just rolling your finger a bit to either side will adjust the tone. You get used to it.
However, learning the violin is like learning two instruments: the fingering and the bowing. It can be difficult at first just to get a basic tone out of the thing.
You won't get very good until you've been playing for quite some time.
But if you want an instrument that mimics the expressiveness of the human voice, violin will do that for you once you get good.

PS - when you learn violin, you'll also know mandolin because the strings are tuned identically.
