I was given a first act clarinet and?
It's been gently used. It was a gift, I didn't buy it. Now I've played it a couple times (and I'm a total beginner at the clarinet, been playing it less than a month) and it sounds and works okay.
It's plastic. I don't understand why people bash first act so much. Does anyone besides me have first hand experience with them and call tell me what's so supposedly bad about that brand of clarinets? Thanks.
They bash them because they're made in China and everyone knows that "all things from China are bad". Right, we know that can't possibly be true, can it. But, some things from China (or anywhere else are indeed bad).
The other reason they bash them is because they aren't made by Yamaha or Jupiter or Selmer or other companies they've heard of but didn't know that the lower student horns by some of those companies are made in..... go ahead and guess... yes! China (and Taiwan). In fact, some are made in the exact same factories by the exact same workers. Imagine that. ☺
And then some people bash them because they don't cost enough. Those people don't care if it works or not - only how impressive the label is on it. We Americans tend to like a nice show of ostentatious materialism.
When Yamaha and Yanigasawa first started importing to the US, we heard the same thing about the "cheap garbage made in Japan" - because they weren't Selmer, Conn, or King. 100 years ago many musicians complained about the "cheap American made garbage" from Selmer, Conn, and King because, as everyone known, only Parisians can make a good clarinet. [sarcasm intended]
Here's the real deal for you from someone that has played a lot of these instruments from the cheapest beginner horn to the finest pro horn: At the bottom where the student plastic clarinets are - they're all the same. They aren't made great and the materials aren't so hot but they're essentially the same. For a couple, you get to pay extra for them because of trade tariffs or simple brand marketing. They work for students that aren't exactly ready to play the Mozart at Carnegie. Between $250ish and $800ish there just isn't a lot of difference in quality - and therefor no difference in playability.
At the top they're the same too. An R-13 isn't any "better" than a Selmer Paris or Leblanc Paris or a Patricola or etc... They're essentially the same too - best materials available with the finest craftsmanship and high dollar to buy that. They play really well and are great for professionals that are going to play the Mozart at Carnegie. Giving one to a beginner is like learning to drive in a Ferrari - serious overkill. And, these will cost you over $3,000 with many in the $5,000 range - which isn't a problem for someone making a living playing clarinet but is a bit extreme for someone in high school.
In the middle are all sorts of models with all sorts of features that are essentially the same as everyone else's model that has the same build and features but different from those that have different build and features. Not unlike the way a cheap Ford and a cheap Chevy are just about the same but not the same as an expensive Cadillac and probably a little better than the cheapest Kia. But, they're all cars and they all get you where you're going and back - some just do it more reliably or more comfortably than others.
Many repair techs don't like to work on these though. It's not because they're hard to work on but because it's really hard to get parts and because the build quality is so low (you get what you pay for) that they tend to not stay repaired very well.
