Should I get a flamenco or classical guitar?
Ok I have played classical guitar for 5 years but a few days ago totally broke and I am thinking of buying a new guitar but I thought about buying a flamenco guitar and play both flamenco and classical with it. What do you think of it?
You certainly could play both flamenco and classical on a flamenco guitar. But there are a few things about flamenco guitars that you should know:
1) there are two types of flamenco guitars, blancas ("whites") and negras ("blacks"). Blancas (the most common) have a dry, nasal, "punchy" sound. The sound is not as deep or resonant as a classical guitar. Negras, made with rosewood (palosanto) back and sides, and have a sound that is more like a classical guitar -- sort of between a blanca and a classical guitar. Because of the differences in wood, negras are more expensive.
2) flamenco guitars have a low, fast action. The action is often so low that that the strings buzz on the fretboard a little bit. This is considered normal, and not a defect.
So a flamenco guitar is going to sound different from a classical guitar. Depending on the kind of classical music you play that may be Ok, or not Ok.
The other option is that you could buy a classical guitar and play flamenco on it. To do that you'll need to install an inexpensive plastic guard called a golpeador or tapping plate. It protects the face of the guitar from damage when you strike the face with the fingers of your right hand. Flamenco guitars come with those already attached.
So you can go either way -- buy classical and play both, or buy flamenco and play both. If you are seriously interested in flamenco, I STRONGLY recommend that you study with a flamenco teacher. The techniques used in flamenco are difficult to master, and the feedback from a teacher is essential.
Yamaha makes a good entry-level flamenco guitar. You can get one for around $300 at Guitar Center. They are great instruments for beginning flamenco students with a nice flamenco sound and decent action. They are as good as many guitars costing two or three times as much.
So it just depends on what kind of music you'll play most of the time, how serious you are about flamenco, and how you see yourself developing as a musician. If you are very serious about flamenco I can guarantee you that you will eventually want a good flamenco guitar. John Shelton and Susan Farretta make terrific flamenco guitars. A Shelton-Farretta blanca will cost around $3000, including an Ameritage case. In my experience they are as good as blancas costing 5000 or more. $3000 is a lot of money, but worth every penny.
