How do you prevent acoustic guitar strings from popping?
I'm playing around with altered tunings (non-EADGBe), like Andy McKee or Don Ross songs, and every time I try to change tuning, I pop a string. The last one popped when I was REDUCING tension, not raising. Is there any way to either prevent or help reduce broken guitar strings? Tips of any sorts? Strings to buy? Thanks in advance.
Old strings break. Any dramatic change in tension might set them off. Changing your strings more often might do the trick. Also check any parts along the path of the string that might have burrs in it, usually in the saddle or the nut. If they always break at the same place, that's where the problem's likely to be.
Google "guitar string tension." I won't tell you any specific brands, because you get what you pay for and for the most part, strings are strings. I play in a few alternate tunings myself, and usually, the strings I use can handle it because I use heavy strings. But, it can make a difference what gauge you use. There's charts available, I was checking one out just the other day, D'Addario, I think. You can make a custom set of strings based on optimum tension, roughly 17 pounds of pressure a string.
