The bridge pins for my acoustic guitar won't stay in!?
I am changing the strings for the first time in a couple of years on my Alvarez jumbo acoustic. I use a pin extractor to pull them straight out, but when I put in the new string and start to tighten it up, the pins come out with very little tension in the string. They go all the way down in the bridge but don't stay in. It's like the hole is suddenly too big for the pin. What can I do? I was thinking about turning up the heat or standing the guitar in the bathroom while I shower so the heat/steam will make the wood swell. Is this a good idea?
I've played a few acoustics over the years and haven't had this problem before, even with a really cheap banger I learned on years ago. I believe my Alvarez cost around $500, and it certainly does not play or sound like a cheap guitar. Thanks for your help.
This is pretty normal, especially for aging acoustics. I have a Seagull S6+ that is about 10 years old, and it still plays and sounds as good as when I bought it.
It is a little tricky, you need to put a little tension on the string and hold the pin in place. Once you get enough tension on the string, the pin will securely hold in place.
Sometimes you get pins that are plainly too small...I bought some brass ones that would not stay in the holes at all. I gave them to a friend who has a Taylor, and they fit perfect.
If you continue to have problems, I'd recommend taking it to a luthier. Don't mess with the heat or shower...likely the steam will loosen the glue and you'll have a pile of firewood.
