Lead Paint
My husband wants to know how to disinfect when working around lead paint?

How can you disinfect clothes, floors, and tools when working around lead paint? We do not have any children but we are concerned for our safety as well. He wears a mask at work but when he comes home, the lead particles are in his clothes so I'm sure lead is being transferred from his job to his clothes, to the car and then into out house. What can we do to disinfect?

The OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1926.62 clearly states that If your husband is exposed above the "Action Level" for lead he must be supplied with a 1/2 face negative pressure respirator that has a "Protection Factor" of 10. The Action Level for lead in construction and general industry is 30 micrograms per cubic meter of air (30 ug/m3) over an 8 hour time weighted average TWA. In addition he must be supplied with protective over clothing at his request and have hygiene facilities available.

For more info please read http://home.mindspring.com/~wrltc/lswp.pdf Its a book I wrote for parents doing re-modeling or having it done. And lead issues in general. It was paid for by a fed/state grant. Which means its your book as much as mine. Education about this subject is my job.

For more direct questions please contact me at wrltc@mindspring.com And feel free to pass this along to others.

If he is in a dusty environment he should at the very least vacuum his close before leave the work site. This should be done with a HEPA filtered vac. If possible set up a changing room for him at home. This should have hard flooring so it can be wet mopped. place his close in a separate bag or hamper and clean them separately.
