Will the Martin Backpacker be a suitable guitar for playing as a street musician?
I am planning to backpack around Europe, and would like to extend my budget and gain some performance experience by busking, or playing on the street. The Martin Backpacker seems like the best choice for its price, and its weight and size. But I am hoping it will produce enough sound to be heard on the street.
If not, can you recommend an alternative in the same price range / weight / size? Thanks!
It is a very good guitar choice when considering space for traveling. Some important things to know about the Martin Backpacker is the action is a little high, but you can get a replacement bridge that will lower the action if this is a concern for you.
It is a top heavy guitar, because the neck is solid, and the body has virtually no weight, and it takes a bit of time to get used to the weight distribution.
If you fly with the guitar and check it in, be sure to detune the guitar, as the necks have been known to warp with extreme cold when tuned (normal E). Grampa Elliot was singing with a guy who was playing one not too long ago, and it had quite good sound, much better than I expected.
