I can't tell you how sorry I feel for you! I think if I were in the same position, I would find a couple of luthiers and get estimates on the repairs so you have some kind of idea what you're up against. Then, before doing anything else, tell your friend what happened, and allow them to examine the options I will outline and act according to her preference.

It IS possible to purchase a used D1 (intact) for less than $500 but it could take some shopping around. On the other hand, if there is minimal damage to the bracing that supports the top, you "may" be able to get it repaired for less, but I am not a luthier. I do know that this is a labor-intensive repair and labor will be the bulk of the charges. I'm going to guess that you will not need to replace the entire body, just the top. Martin makes a good quality guitar, as you probably know.

Of course you're depressed, but the sooner you get this taken care of, the sooner you will feel better about it. I commend you for your honesty and highly respect that you are planning to take responsibility for this unfortunate accident. I hope that helps with some of your depression -- just knowing that you're doing the right thing.
