What electric guitar strings would be best?
I want a crisp sound, but still easy to push down on strings. At the moment I'm using Martin and Co. Medium Gauge guitar strings and these are a bit too hard to push on and have quite a dull sound.
If it isn't the strings that are making it hard to push on, can you give me some tips on making the strings looser?
There is nothing wrong with the guitar. It is an awesome guitar, I just need to know about strings.
As far as I know Martin only make acoustic strings(?) They have another brand of electric strings (another name - Darco something I think) which I have never seen or heard anyone use. If you use medium acoustic strings - which are like 013 - then it's no wonder the guitar is hard to play (I really hope I am wrong here
Also, electric strings are nickel wound, while acoustic strings are usually bronze or phosphor bronze. These strings never sounds right on an electric guitar.
The strings preferred by most electric guitar players are brands such as DR, D'addario, Ernie Ball, Fender, GHS or Elixir. Which brand you use is really not that important. They are made the same way, on the same type of machines and with the same materials anyway.
The gauge you use (lighter or heavier sets) is of vital importance though. Most players tend to prefer 010 or 009 sets if they don't tune down. On Fender scale guitars, i tend to use 009s - on Gibson scale length (which is shorter than Fender) I usually prefer 010s.
The only way to find out what suits you the best is to test out various gauges and brands. After a while you find someting which is good for you and then you stick with that.
Be advised that you may need to have the neck truss rod re-adjusted slightly when you change string gauge due to the change in string tension. This is no big deal, but absolutely something you don't want to try yourself unless you know what you're doing.
