Martin Om-21 Acoustic Guitar Natural

$1999

The Martin OM-21 Acoustic Guitar offers top-notch, hand-built craftsmanship. Based on time-tested luthier approaches, coupled with new technological breakthroughs the result is a Martin guitar of premiere construction and design. Martin D15m Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

Martin D15m Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

$1149

The Martin D15M acoustic guitar looks like it came right out of the history books, and delivers a sound for the ages. In its 175-year history, Martin has set more guitar design trends than can be counted. The company still embraces design techniques introduced many years ago to create their guitars' timeless tone. Built on a dreadnought platform, the Martin D15M guitar boasts 14 open frets for a unique design and great range of tone. The top, back, and sides are genuine solid mahogany, offering strong guitar tone, with crisp, clear subtleties in each note's definition. One of mahogany's finest qualities is its density. Although it's not the hardest tonewood, it is free of air pockets and other deformities. The vintage sound produced by the Martin D15M acoustic guitar is reminiscent of the Style 15 Martin guitars made popular during the 1940s. The Martin guitar is equipped with a mortise and tennon neck joint, offering the best wood binding practice ever conceived. Often used for shipbuilding, the process fuses 2 pieces of wood into a single, sturdy unit that stands up to the elements time and time again. The results are evident with the strength in tone and power in projection that you hear with each strum of this Martin acoustic guitar. The Martin guitar's solid mahogany neck further complements the crisp, defined acoustic sound of this dreadnought. The bridge and fingerboard are solid East Indian rosewood, adding smooth sustain to the mix. The 14 open frets, 1-11/16" nut width, 2-1/8" bridge string spacing, and 16" radius add comfort for your intricate fingerboard movements. Other appointments include a single-ring rosette, bone nut, solid/square taper headstock, solid East Indian rosewood headplate, diamonds and square fingerboard inlay, belly-style bridge, nickel open-geared tuning machines with butterbean knobs, and a solid black ebony bridge and end pins. Dressed in a soft satin finish and featuring a Delmar tortoise color pickguard, the Martin D15M guitar glows with classic vintage looks and sound. martin guitars acoustic
Martin or Taylor acoustic guitar?

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and he recently had his Acoustic guitar
stolen out of his car.

I'd love more than anything to get him a new Acoustic, but I know absolutely nothing about guitars.
I remember him saying that if he could have one he'd love to have a Martin Classic Acoustic, but his friends say that I should look into Taylor Acoustic guitars.
I'm not really sure if they're saying this because they're cheaper or not. I don't really care about
the price, but I have no idea which one to get him.

Help? ):

Taylor and Martin both make great guitars. There are differences, and choosing is a very personal thing. If your (lucky to have you) boyfriend has tried them both, then he knows the difference. Oh, I'm assuming that by "Martin Classic" you mean the Standard series...not a classical nylon string guitar? Standard Martins are D-18 models and higher ($2k and up)

I'm going to make some broad generalizations here: please realize that there are exceptions. In general, Martin and Taylor are competing in the same market but have slightly different tonal characteristics. In my experience, Taylor has a bright (to my ear twangy) sound. A lot of musicians like them because they "cut through the mix" on stage. Martin invented the dreadnought guitar and has been the standard that all others are judged by. I think they have a fuller sound....more bass than an equivalent Taylor. Taylor owners would probably describe that bass as "muddy" sounding.

Taylor has a reputation for having great "action" right out of the box. Their "bolt-on" neck makes adjustments easier. New Martin guitars also have great action. Pre-1985, Martin didn't have adjustable truss rods and once the neck started to warp, the action deteriorated. Their reputation for bad action is a vestige from the old days....new ones have great action. I could go on about the differences, but the thing to know is that they both make great instruments...just slightly different.

I started my "good" guitar hunt with Taylor in mind. When I played a Taylor beside a Martin D-16, there was no comparison...the Martin sounded full and well balanced. I didn't buy that Martin, I ended up searching more and ended up with a Martin D-35. But you see, that's just my preference. I've played some sweet Taylors too.

With all the searching and discovery I did, I can't imagine that anybody could have just bought me a guitar and stumbled on the right one. I didn't know the right one until I played it. When you're talking about that much money ($1k - $3k) there aren't any bad guitars....just ones you like better than others. It's a personal choice, so I don't think you can go by what his friends say.

Much as you probably want this to be a surprise, I think your boyfriend needs to try some guitar out first. Can you take him shopping for a new one? Don't tell him you're going to buy it.....just accompany him to some guitar stores and play dumb (but watchful) while he tries some out. Or just come clean and tell him he's got a blank check for his birthday made out to Martin.....believe me, he won't be disappointed either way!
