I don't know which cage arrangement I should have for my hermit crabs.?
I have 6 hermit crabs. 2 Jumbo, 2 medium, and 2 mini crabs. The 2 Jumbo ones are ok together and their cage is fine. But the 2 mediums don't get along so I need to separate them. The 2 mini ones are also fine together. I have 3 cages I just don't want any to be alone. the 2 mini ones get along with both mediums. Where should I put them?
Gradually get them used to each other, dip them in stress coat to make them all smell alike, also the jumbos claw is too big to get in the opening of the smallest hermits shells to eat them, unless their shells are too small for them and they are sticking, put all of the hermits that get along together in two different tanks, the aggressive ones will calm down but put extra shells in with everyone, it happened to me, but be sure you have places to hide, a good coconut substrate deep enough to burrow in to hiode or molt, a choya climbing stick and plenty of shells of all sizes even sizes you think will not work, you never know what the crab will eat, Everyone will tell you to put similar sizes together, but that is a good rule of thumb to go by, But I have mixed sizes together, they all get along, even the aggressive hermit even found its place in the group and is now peaceful, do the mediums get along with any of the others? They are social animals and will need to establish a hierarchy or pecking order with in the group, they will all be excited checking each other out, trading shells, then the activity will calm down.
please read my research paper on shells, it will help keep the peace as many deaths and wounds will come from shell wars or fights
Hermit Crabs 30 years or more in the wild and a long time in captivity,They in time develop individual personalities as well as likes and dislikes as they become accustomed to their new home with you.Buy more than one hermit crab, despite their name that implies the desire for a solitary life, it is on the contrary as hermit crabs are very social animals and need to be in groups to stay healthy. They are often found in as little as a few to numbers in the hundreds and even thousands in the wild. While it is almost impossible to keep several hundred crabs in your home, your crab will be lonely without another crab or two to keep it company and it has been found that keeping at least three is best. You can better observe their social patterns with at least 6-9, although you can most certainly get more, many places do not tell you that the hermit crabs need company for a long happy life.
9.Extra Shells and Aggression
Crabs love to inspect the new possible home and pick out debris , they will stick their largest cheleped into the opening to see if it will be a good fit, then they uncurl their abdomen and vacate the old shell for the new improved shell quickly so they aren't unprotected for long.
It is in their nature as hermit crabs to be always trying on shells , some do it a lot, some switch a little and some never until it gets way to small. I have one crab who has never switched her shell in over two years since I got her, but some of mine are obsessive about it, one cannot explain it, except that a hermit is always looking for a better fitting shell that meets their needs at the moment whether it is for environmental, physical or emotional needs, it is an innate response to always be on the look out to find new shells to fit their immediate wants.
Exploring extra shells is their favorite past time in their constant quest to find the perfect shell to inhabit. Not having extra shells in their tank causes shell stealing, the other tank mate has a better shell that will be a better fit and it tries to evict the other crab out of his shell. If you see this happening remove the crab who is bullying and isolate him with a shell similar to the one he was trying to take over in the molting isolation tank if empty for a few hours in hopes of forgetting the other shell.
Having enough extra shells in the tank usually satisfies that need if they are of the preferred variety. There are many reasons for this, they may want a thinner shell , one with more mother of pearl as in the turbo shells. In the wild there is a phenomena called a "Shell Convention"hundreds to thousands of land hermits get together and start to trade shells one by one , it starts to cascade into a mass shell trading frenzy with mating occurring at times too.
Keeping hermits of the same size together will avoid the problem of the larger crabs bullying smaller crabs in shell altercations during which you may hear their voices called chirping, chirring or stridulation usually a hermit crab will use it to protest an altercations by rubbing certain body parts together. You will hear this at other times a crabs chirring for no apparent reason.
A crab may start to switch shells a lot prior to a molt, they may go down a size because it is easier to burrow and dig into their substrate while wearing a smaller shell, after the molting process is complete they will trade up to a larger shell to accommodate their new growth.
