Removing tile from shower pan floor. How far down do I go?
Another shower repair question. I'm replacing all the tile in a shower. I got all the tile and old sheetrock off the wall, no problem, but now I'm working on the floor and I want to make sure I don't make a mistake.
The layers appear to be:
Tile
Concrete
Blue Rubber shower liner that goes up the wall about 6" or so.
It seems to be that I should try to get the tile while leaving the concrete and shower liner. Is this correct? If my assumption is right, do I just start carefully attacking it with a hammer and chisel?
Thanks!
If the concrete is in good shape, not cracked or broken, then all you should have to do is remove the tile and whatever mortar was used to set the tile. If the mortar is only about 1/4" or so, you should replace the entire liner as well because it will probably get damaged as you try to get the tile out. In that case rip out the entire liner down to the underlayment. When installing a new liner, be sure to follow directions for fitting around the drain very carefully. after that it should be a pretty straightforward tiling job.
