Help choosing guitar strings-I can't find ones I like?
I have no idea what strings were on the guitar when it was given to me (acoustic), but I LOVED the sound. No vibration or ringing, just the clear crisp notes.
I eventually changed them, and bought D'Addario light phosphourus bronze strings. I REALLY didn't like them, I didn't get the clear sound from them that I did the strings before.
One of my strings snapped a few days ago, so I bought new strings and changed them today. I'm trying to get the sound I had before, so I bought D'Addario light nickel would (BRIGHT round wound) strings. UGH suddenly I want the bronze ones back!
The sound is even more....blurry? Extremly twangy sounding.
What kind of strings should I try to get that very clear, no 'extra' sound back?
Hi.
First off - nickel strings are basically meant for electric guitars. So it is no wonder you don't find that sound pleasing on your acoustic. They will likely come across as sounding thin and very bright.
The only thing that really is common is the unwound strings on electric guitars and acoustic steel string guitars. These strings are almost always steel (the acoustic sets are usually heavier/thicker though).
Let us look at some things. First - are you sure that the gauge you're using is similar to what you had? A light set will sound different than a heavier set. Also, a light acoustic set is heavier than a light electric set of strings. I suspect your guitar came equipped with somewhat heavier strings (medium perhaps?), and that this may explain some of the difference in sound you're experiencing.
I would likely try a slightly heavier set of strings first if I were you. You should be made aware that heavier strings are harder to play and that you likely will need to have your neck truss rod adjusted slightly (I'll get back to that shortly).
Another thing to consider, is this: How old were the srings which came with the guitar in the first place? Brand new strings are quite a lot brighter in sound and not everyone likes that totally bright
sound to begin with. In other words, you may want to have your strings played in a little before they sound "just right" to you. I will have to add that most players prefer the sparkly bright sound...
I would also need to ask if it is in fact a guitar for steel strings that you have, since you don't say (and some beginners and even dealers sadly do get this messed up). Let us pray it is a steel string guitar, because putting steel strings on a classical (nylon string) guitar will eventually ruin it completely. The reason I ask is because nylon and steel have way different sound, and that it may have been this nylon string sound you liked in the first place.
Let's assume it is an acoustic steel string guitar you have. In strings for these guitars you will usually have a core of steel and windings of bronze or phosphor/bronze alloy. You may also want to test phosphor/bronze strings as they sound different than the bronze sets - slightly less bright.
Then you have hybrid sets such as silk and steel. These are softer than the ones above and a lot less bright. they usually have silver-plated copper wire wound over a silk and steel core.
Finally (as far as strings goes), you have the various coted ones, such as Cleartone and Elixir. Since they have a very thin protective coating, they may seem to sound just a bit different. They last longer but are somewhat more expensive.
The only way to find what is right for you is to test, I'm afraid. The largest specialized stores should have guitars set up with different types of strings, although this is not common. You can also read more about the different string brands and types here: http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/
When you put on a new set of string, then make a written note of the strings you use. Next time you know what to keep or what you have tried if you'd like something else 
You should have your steel string guitar adjusted properly for the set you're going to use. If you have light set and the guitar is adjusted for a heavier set, then you may not get a good sound. The action gets lower, and you may even get string buzz and notes not ringing properly.
You will either need to have someone setting up the guitar for you, or learn more about it yourself. At least adjusting the truss rod inside the neck is easy as a walk in the park once you know how. You can learn more about that on the page below if you feel like it.
