Would it be bad to put steel strings on a classical guitar?
and what exactly is the difference between an acoustic guitar and classical one?
It would be 1) impossible, and 2) a disaster. Classical guitars are more lightly braced since the total tension exerted by a set of nylon strings is far less than the corresponding tension of a set of steel strings, even the lightest gauge steel strings.
I say it's impossible since steel strings have ball ends and classical guitars require nylon strings that have a plain end designed for a special knot on the bridge. Even if you were able to somehow thread the steel string through the bridge from back to front you'd still have the problem with the higher tension.
A classical guitar is an acoustic guitar with a slot head, tie bridge, nylon strings, a wide fretboard, and bracing in one of several patterns (fan, X, kasha, etc.) using braces designed for the lower tension of the nylon strings. The neck typically joins the body at the 12th fret. Classical guitars are virtually always played fingerstyle.
A steel-string guitar is an acoustic guitar with a solid or slot head, pin bridge, steel strings, a narrower fretboard, and bracing in one of several patterns (but typically X braced) using thicker braces designed for the higher tension of the steel strings. It may or may not have a pick guard but classical guitars never do (although some have golpes). The neck most often joins the body at the 14th fret. Steel string guitars can be played either fingerstyle, with a pick, or with a thumb pick and optional finger picks.
There are other types of acoustic guitars including arch tops and resophonic guitars. Hope that helps.
