Recommended acoustic guitar strings for beginners?
I have a Fender acoustic steel-string. I haven't built up good calluses yet, so are light gauge strings the way to go? I play mostly rock/pop songs. I know that Elixir, Ernie Ball, and D'Arggio (sp?) are supposed to be good, but I'd like to get relatively cheap strings of those brands and switch around until I find what I like. Guitar players, what do you recommend?
Also, can someone explain the differences between nanoweb, phospor bronze, and other types of strings?
I recommend light gauge strings, specifically Elixir nanoweb light gauge acoustic strings. These are coated strings, which makes them more expensive but gives you much more string life, makes them easier on your fingers, and eliminates finger squeak. There are a variety of steel alloy compositions that each have a slightly different tone. You might want to keep trying different types of strings until you find your favorite.
I've been playing for 46 years and I still use light gauge strings.
