Can you restring a folk guitar with nylon strings?
I've got a Yamaha FG 412 (which isn't really a folk guitar but uses steel strings). I've got phosphor bronze strings on them now but lately they've been killing my fingers. Can you restring a guitar like this with nylon strings?
It won't hurt your guitar to put nylon strings on a steel string guitar, which is what you have. Nylon strings have less tension.
What you should never do, is put steel strings on a nylon, or classical guitar!
Go ahead and try it, remembering...the sound or projection may not be what you expected. You may not like it...steel string guitars are braced differently and the nylon strings may sound dull.
Bottom line...tough it out...replace your steel strings with another decent set of steel strings...like a light guage D'Addario.... make sure your high E string, the thinnest string is no larger than a .12 guage. You may have had a heavier set on your guitar? A lighter guage will be easier on your fingers.
Eventually your calluses will develop better and your fingers will get stronger...no pain, no gain.
Also, it might be a good idea to have an "expert" look at your guitar. Possibly the action (the height of the strings from the fretboard) could be decreased? This might involve a truss rod adjustment...but well worth the money (about $35 where I live) to have your guitar in top notch playing condition.
Best of luck, and keep practicing till those fingers bleed.
From a long, long, long, time professional guitarist
