Can I use these strings on my guitar?
I really like these specific strings, they're Elixer Nanoweb acoustic strings. I'm in love with them. They have like an outer coating on the string that makes them so comfortable but ANYWAYS>>
I read on the Taylor website that you can't put the Elixer Nanoweb extra light acoustic strings on dreadnought guitars, but they were specifically talking about their Taylor's I THINK, that's where I need the help. I always used extra light strings on my dread and they were fine but the site is saying not to use them on dreads so idk if it's that specific string brand?? heeeellpp
But I don't know if I should try this out because I don't wanna mess up and warp my neck and bridge and need a 60 dollar set-up.
And I hate the tone of dreadnoughts, lol. That's why I hate the heavier strings. I like a sharper cleaner lighter sound, that's why I'm saving up for a taylor acoustic 114ce grand auditorium. My dread is a little ibanez 200 dollar crappy thing. I guess i'll try it.
On a cheap guitar, there is no specific technical reason why you can't use extra lights, but there are tonal reasons. However, on an expensive high quality guitar, there are some technical reasons.
On their site, they are referring to their own dreadnoughts because the factory set-up is with 13's (mediums). Acoustic guitars are more dependent on factory set-ups than electrics, and the intonation is going to be different with different gauged strings. Also, high-quality manufacturers like Taylor Martin Gibson etc use different sized nuts for their various models. The nuts used on their dreads, jumbos etc are likely filed for mediums, so a pro guitartist who wanted to use lights on a quality dread or jumbo would change the nut. That would be even more important if you were changing to mediums on a smaller guitar, as the strings would tend to bind when tuning (especially G and D). Another important reason is that the difference in tension between mediums and extra lights is quite a lot. If you have a Taylor/Martin/Gibson dread or jumbo, you should use mediums because the truss is adjusted for higher tension. If you keep extra lights on it for a long period, you could end up with a warped neck due to lack of relief on the truss rod. Tonally, on a quality guitar that can take the added string pressure, mediums are going to drive the top harder and produce more tone, so if you're using lights on your dread, you're kind of defeating the purpose of having a dread to begin with. Unless you're a big string-bender, you should try to go as heavy as you can in order to keep tone.
So basically, for YOU, what it boils down to is this: If you're playing a cheap guitar, then play the strings that you feel the most comfortable with because it probably wont affect your guitar in a technical sense. Your tone suffers, but that's all. If its a good guitar, use mediums like the manufacturer says to.
Now...all that being said, I remember many years ago, my cousin's Martin D-28 dreadnought had a sticker that said "light gauge strings only"... so obviously there are gray areas lol.
