Where Should I Go To Buy My First Guitar And What To Consider

When purchasing one's first guitar, there are a number of things to consider. Whether an independent music store is located close to one's home, how great the selection at a local retailer is, and whether an instrument dealer is willing to negotiate price are things to keep in mind before spending your hard-earned cash.

Before doing anything, browse the catalog of major retailers like Musician's Friend to get an idea of the most inexpensive guitar models and how much they cost. Why are we looking at the most inexpensive models? When starting out, it's important not to get carried away and buy a fancy guitar boasting all kinds of bells and whistles. If Beethoven only owned the cheapest keyboard available, he would still use it to play beautiful music, right? After you have a few in mind and have a good idea of the price range, you can take that knowledge with you to a local music store and see what they have in their inventory. In addition to supporting people in your community, the advantage of using an independent dealer over a larger one is that you're giving yourself the opportunity to network with other musicians in your area who will support you and advise you as a budding guitar player yourself.

Next, if the selection at your local retailer contains many of the models you saw in the larger dealer's catalog, try out as many as you can. Sure, you don't know how to play anything yet, but you can hold the guitar and see what feels comfortable to you. Also ask the seller what he or she recommends for a beginner while keeping in mind that salespeople will nearly always try to up-sell you. Don't be tempted to complicate your experience as a budding guitarist by purchasing an electric guitar. Electric guitars come with too many distractions (amplifier settings, tone knobs, pickup selectors, etc.) for a beginner. Brands like Fender, Ibanez, and Takamine make many acoustic guitars that are reasonably-priced for beginners and are of excellent quality to boot.

You also should never be afraid to bring up price to negotiate with a seller. After all, the worst thing that could happen is that you have to pay the price already listed or go somewhere else for a better deal. If the price for the guitar at the music store is the same or lower than the price in the catalog, then you're set! Sometimes, however, you will find that the dealer's price is more than what you saw in the catalog. If this is the case, simply show the seller how much this guitar is selling for elsewhere, mention that you would love to buy locally, and ask if he or she can meet or beat that price. There's a good chance you'll get what you're after. If not, you can take your business to a competitor or just purchase the guitar from the catalog. Either way, you've found the best deal possible for a guitar that works for you.
