For a beginner who is serious about guitar, what would you recommend?
it's not about the brand of guitar so much as whether you have the talent, patience, and discipline to take the serious amount of time it's going to take to learn to play proficiently.
get the cheapest one you can afford....the only real point to watch for is string hieghts at the 12th fret and above....if they aren't relatively as close to the fretboard as at the lower frets, choose another.
then, see if you've got it in you and save for a quality instrument as you get better.
any of those will do but the epip or ibanez are probably better choices
