difference between 6 string and 12 string acoustic guitar?

i want to purchase an acoustic guitar, but don't really know if i should purchase a 6 string or a 12 string.

Well, they're very similar to play. The twelve-string has its strings in pairs, and they're tuned standard to EAGDBE just like a six--the three higher-pitched pairs ("courses", in technical terms) are tuned in unison, and the three lower are tuned in octaves. The octaves in the lower strings make the chord more full, the unisons in the upper strings make them a little more balanced in volume compared to the lower strings.
And you can play some saucy leads with those double lower courses, as you can hear from those 1960s singles by The Byrds. I like that sound so much that I picked up a cheap six-string from a Goodwill store and re-strung it so that it's three courses and all are in octaces--CGA--but haven't ever taken the thing out in public LOL
If you're just starting out, get a six-string. The twelve is harder to tune and harder to play because you've got to place your left fingers very precisely to cover both strings on the fret-board. Learn the basics on the six, and then advance to a twelve.
