Seeing as you already play the piano and sounds like you can obviously read music, it would probably take you maybe a couple of months to pick up the basics (I mean basic chords C,D,E,F,G,A). it all depends on how far you are able to stretch your fingers and what extent you are willing to push them to. I was started learning guitar when I was 8 and now play the piano, and I have picked up the basics very quickly, having only been learned piano for a month or so. And also, I disagree with the guy who said you would be too small for a dreadnought guitar. I started learning when I was 8 and was very small for my age, within a couple of weeks I was playing a school concert on a full size. Go into a proper music shop and try one out. They will give you a hand choosing what one fits you best. Personally, I would recommend an electro-acoustic guitar. You can play them normally like and acoustic, or plug them into an amp and although they might not deliver quite the same tone as an electric, they are just as loud when plugged in. If a full size is too big for you, which I highly doubt, then you could maybe think about a 3/4 size if it really is too small, but the smaller scale guitars (1/2 and 3/4 sizes) generally tend to go out of tune more and are usually made for childrens use. For some reason, all the guitar makers seem to think that children will put up with rubbish guitars, so the kids guitars are mass produced in chinese factories and are nearly always rubbish quality. As I said, just go into your local music shop and they find you the right guitar.
